Zithromax (azithromycin) is a *prescription only medication.

Zithromax is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.

WarningsYou should not use Zithromax if you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by taking azithromycin.

Before taking this medicine:You should not use Zithromax if you are allergic to azithromycin, or if:

• you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by taking Zithromax; or
• you are allergic to similar drugs such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin.
• To make sure Zithromax is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
• liver disease;
• kidney disease;
• myasthenia gravis;
• a heart rhythm disorder; or
• low levels of potassium in your blood; or
• long QT syndrome (in you or a family member)

Zithromax side effects:Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Zithromax: (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling). Seek medical treatment if you have a serious drug reaction that can affect many parts of your body. Symptoms may include: skin rash, fever, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, muscle aches, severe weakness, unusual bruising, or yellowing of your skin or eyes. How to Take Zithromax: Take this medicine as advised by your doctor. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water and on an empty stomach. Do not take more medicine by the dose than the recommended dose. If you need to, take the medicine every day while you are taking it. Do not take a dose higher or different from the dose you take. If you are taking this medication more than once a day, remember that the time it takes to work varies from person to person. Your doctor may tell you to take this medication as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than the recommended dose of this medication in a 24 hour period. Talk to your doctor if you are taking this medication regularly more than once a day: • more than 3 500mg doses • more than 4, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding • taking any other form of this medicine

Do not take Zithromax if you are allergic to any other drugs or any of the ingredients in Zithromax including, but not limited to, herbal products, dietary supplements, and vitamins. This may cause your allergic reaction.

Does Zithromax cause liver problems? Are there any drug interactions with Zithromax? Can I take Zithromax with my other medicines? Drug interactions can affect the way other medicines treat the same problem. Check with your doctor before using any medicine while taking Zithromax. Inform your doctor if you have conditions like liver disease, kidney disease, or seizure disorders before using Zithromax. During treatment with Zithromax, it may cause serious side effects such as: • heart rhythm problems • muscle disorders such as muscle weakness or spasms • possible eye problems such as non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) or retinitis pigmentosa • possible skin reactions such as itching (when youfirst see a doctor), redness or burning in your eyes, which may lead to painful urination or a non-EQUIPLOSTING headache • skin reactions such as contact dermatitis • redness or itching in the eyes such as sudden vision loss in one or both eyes • unexplained fever, skin rash, skin reddening, blistering and peeling of the skin • any side effects such as muscle weakness or spasms that may lead to you skipping usual doses or discontinuing this medication if you notice these side effects.

Zithromax has been shown to cause some side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these mild reactions do not go away within a few days.

Common side effects reported from Zithromax use include:

• Nausea
• Stomach pain
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Headaches

This is not a complete list of adverse effects – though these are among the most common.Seek medical attention right away if you experience any of the following symptoms while taking Zithromax:

• Changes in heartbeat
• Confusion/ dizziness
• Fainting
• Skin rash
• Hives
• Itching

• Watery or bloody stool
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with and any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before starting treatment with Zithromax.

Zithromax can interact with other medications and substances, causing potentially serious side effects. These medications and substances include certain anticoagulants (blood thinners), colchicine (Colcrys, Gloperba, Mitigare), cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune), digoxin (Lanoxin), dihydroergotamine (D. H. E. 45, Migranal, Trudhesa); ergotamine (Ergomar, in Migergot), medications for irregular heartbeat such as amiodarone (Nexterone, Pacerone), dofetilide (Tikosyn), procainamide, quinidine, and sotalol (Betapace, Sorine, Sotylize), nelfinavir (Viracept), and phenytoin (Dilantin, Phenytek).

Certain antacids can reduce the effectiveness of Zithromax tablets and Zithromax powder, so you should allow time between taking antacids and your Zithromax dose.

In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant before starting treatment with this medication.

Zithromax is not effective if you have:

• sinusitis; or
• seizure; or
• heart problems, liver problems, or low potassium levels in your blood.

How long does it take for Zithromax to affect your ability to take or maintain a job? How long you take Zithromax depends on the drugs you take and how they affect your body. If you take Zithromax in combination with antibiotics, tetracycline, or a blood thinners drug, call your doctor immediately or go to the emergency room as soon as you can. Do not take more than one drug at the same time. Zithromax and other antibiotics can affect your ability to produce and/or store potassium, so you must use potassium sparing diuretics like tranylcyanate if you are using Zithromax and need to prevent bone loss. Zithromax should be taken at the same time every day with or without food. Call your doctor if you miss a dose of Zithromax and you still need to take it.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Do not take Zithromax during the first 6 months of pregnancy unless definitely linked to the drug. Do not take Zithromax during the last 3 months of pregnancy if you are breastfeeding. Zithromax can affect your fetus if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking Zithromax during this time.Do not take Zithromax if you are allergic to azithromycin, to the drug, to other drugs that can cause didehn, tetracycline, or any other drugs that can retard the growth of potassium-deficient cells, or if you are taking a specific blood thinners drug. Tell your doctor if you are taking:

Nitrates including:

• nitroglycerin tablets to prevent blood pressure from dropping to a dangerous level. If you have been told by your doctor that you are low blood pressure, your doctor should not treat you with nitrates.
• any other nitrate drug.

Some people take more than one drug at the same time, or they take the drug for a longer period of time than prescribed. Zithromax can worsen this effect and cause dizziness or kidney problems. Taking more than the prescribed dose of Zithromax can increase the risk of side effects such as headache, nausea, and dizziness.
